On 18 November 2008, CCPR, the um
brella body for sport and recreation, held its second 'Subs for Clubs' reception in the House of Commons. The event followed a successful postcard campaign, during which over 400 CASCs urged their MP to write to the Chancellor about the ‘subs for clubs’ proposal. Many of the MPs attended had received cards from clubs in their constituency.
Subs for Clubs calls on the Government to increase the financial benefits available to Community Amateur Sports Clubs on the income they generate from their junior subscriptions. The CASC scheme has already saved grassroots sport over £46 million and the adoption of the Subs for Clubs campaign would help to ensure that grassroots sports clubs thrive and also help to hone the sports stars of tomorrow. Budget day 2009 provides an excellent opportunity for the Government to introduce the proposal, providing much needed support for grass roots clubs facing increased costs in today’s difficult financial climate.
Beijing Olympics track cycling Champion, and Athens rowing silver medallist Rebecca Romero lent her support to the event, stating: “Without grassroots provision, elite success is not possible. Even though we do not know who many of them are yet, our Olympic champions of the future are being given a chance to succeed at community sports clubs across the country. This is why it is so vital that community clubs are given as much financial help and support as possible. Allowing them to reclaim Gift Aid on junior subscriptions is a step in the right direction.”
